Square, circular, and apsidal, single-storied,multi-storied, hipped and gabled, and always with an enigmatic profile, the Kerala temple is at once familiar with its constituent parts and inexpressible for its distinctive architectural character. This lecture examines the issue of style––drāviḍa, Kerala, both?––in the form of the medieval Kerala temple, with a particular emphasis on its regional mode of architectural sculpture.

Arathi Menon

Arathi Menon

Arathi Menon is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She earned her doctorate in Art History and Archaeology from Columbia University and specializes in the art histories of South Asia, with a focus on the material culture of the premodern Indian Ocean world. Menon’s current book project examines the medieval art and architecture of the churches, mosques, synagogues, and temples of the Malabar region. She was recently named a recipient of the Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2023–2024) in the History of Art.
